Chapter Ten

Hannah

Ican’t believe I came from nipple play.

And I came hard.

And with Moose.

And in the middle of a crisis, or the aftermath of one, anyway.

I couldn’t blame the adrenaline running through my body for the way I’d reacted to his touch. That was chemistry 101 and we had it in spades.

Once again, I fought the urge to go back to bed, knowing I had animals that needed me. With that in mind, I threw on a pair of robin’s egg blue scrubs and went looking for Moose.

I found him in the kitchen on the phone. He hung up just as I came into the room.

“What is it?” I dug some coffee grounds and a filter from the cupboard and started filling the machine.

He ran a hand through his short, dark hair. “Club shit. I got to run. The Prospects will be here to keep an eye until I get back.”

“Anything I can do to help?” Clearly things were escalating. I knew Moose would tell me when he could. I hated not knowing, but the worry didn’t really help either.

“Shit’s kind of crazy right now. I don’t want you in danger. Maybe you could go to a friend’s house with the Prospects until–”

“I have a rescue to run, Moose.” I crossed my arms over my chest. “Everyone needs food, water and their cages clean. Peaches has probably escaped and is out terrorizing the neighborhood.” His worry for me was sweet, but I couldn’t put my entire life on hold.

He studied my face before nodding. “I know you have to go out and save the world, Doc. I’ll be at Rust Valley with some of the other guys, so I’ll be close by. Just stick with the Prospects, okay?”

“I will.”

He stepped closer, hunching so we were eye to eye. “I know you don’t need me hanging over you and treating you like you’re made of glass. I just, fuck, I can’t think straight when you’re not around. The idea that you’re out there being fucking amazing and some scum bag could just,” he paused, running his thumbs over my shoulders. “Just be careful, okay? Please.”

I pulled him into a hug and kissed him long and slow. “I promise I will.” He gave me one last lingering look before heading towards the door just as the Prospects pulled up out front.

My insides were all soft and marshmellowy from the way he talked to me. He wasn’t romantic comedy sweet, but he let me know how he felt in his own way. He wouldn’t put me in a cage to keep me safe, he’d burn anything that could hurt me so I could be me and be safe at the same time.

I turned my attention to making coffee just as my phone rang.

“Hey, Montana. I hope you aren’t calling to ask for another favor. The last one is still keeping me pretty busy.”

She laughed. “No, just calling to check up on the pups. I haven’t heard from you. You missed yoga class.”

I blew out a breath.
